Residents of Malaba in Juja Sub-County on Monday took to the streets over the construction of the first secondary school in the area’s common land.

The project, which is spearheaded by area MP Francis Munyua, has attracted the disapproval of residents accusing the MP of leading the land grab.

The residents allege that the MP has been working closely with some ill-intentioned village elders from the area for the construction of the secondary school. Those who led the protest said they were not consulted over the development.

Further, the residents said that the 32-acre piece of land was set aside after an agreement between landowners in the area to ensure there is separation between government and public land. They said that there should be consultation before any construction is set on the ground.

It took efforts by Witeithie MCA Peter Muiruri to calm the protesting public who were marching towards the Thika superhighway heading to the MP’s office. The MCA assured them that no construction will go on without the involvement of residents.

Munyua, in a separate meeting later on Monday, refuted claims that he is planning to grab the land. He said that he will not relent in the construction of the institution since there must be a common land that should be used by the government.

Munyua called on his constituents to keep off politics in the school construction saying that he is aware of the incitement that has been ongoing in the area.
