Uasin Gishu County Environment and Natural Resources CeC Mary Njogu has warned residents against dumping garbage in drainage systems.
Speaking when she supervised cleaning exercises in Eldoret Town and Langas estate on Saturday, the CeC said locals were dumping waste in drainage systems.
She said the dumping has resulted to clogging of drainages leading to spillage of sewer water.
The CeC said the county government has started unclogging the drainage system to allow flow of sewage water and other wastes adding that the county government is in the process of upgrading drainage systems.
“We have started repair and renovation of drainage systems in a bid to boost sanitation standards in the county,” she said.
Njogu advised locals to dump their waste at designated dumping sites, adding that flooding occurs because of the waste dumped in the systems.
The CeC acknowledged the challenges faced in waste management and said the county is working on coming up with ways that will see waste management done in the right way.
She said that the county will install waste bins across all towns and estates within the county in a bid to encourage proper waste management.
The CeC called for formulation of policies and laws that will conserve the environment.
