Retired teachers and other retired workers from the public and private sectors have been urged to form Saccos and borrow loans in order to venture into income generating activities and be self-reliant.
Community leader and Democratic Party (DP) Chairman Gatundu North branch, John Mariga said that retirement should not affect one's self development.
"I urge you to form Saccos and live an active and a decent life. Retirement should not slow down your life and development,” said Mariga.
Addressing retired teachers at a meeting in Ng'ethu, Gatundu North on Wednesday, Mariga appealed to the government to consider appointing retirees in public corporations boards as they possess vast knowledge and experience.
"The state needs to consider its senior citizens in public appointments. Their experience is important to our country,” he said.
He at the same time accused the government of disregarding a court order requiring retired teachers to be paid their pensions saying that many are now living from hand to mouth.
