Ruiru MP Esther Gathogo has urged agricultural technical officers to regularly visit farmers in lower parts of the constituency to increase their capacity.
She expressed concern that although the area was endowed with rich soils, sufficient rains to sustain growth of certain crops were the main undoing.
The MP however said before the government can provide irrigations projects to cover the entire area, farmers should be advised on drought-resistant crops which can withstand inadequate rains.
Gathogo spoke to residents at Gatongora Chiefs Camp on Tuesday said farmers incur heavy losses whenever rains fail before their crops mature.
She, however, said if farmers were equipped with the knowledge on which crops to grow, they can still realise harvests even if rains fail, they could be assisted economically.
The MP said farmers should also be assisted with subsidised farm inputs because they realised poor harvests last season.
The legislator has called on the county government to involve residents of such areas in their field days and farmers’ education as they have always been left out of such programmes.
The MP made tours to various wards in her constituency to discuss the projects residents want initiated in their areas.
