Deputy President William Ruto has warned secondary school heads and principals against demanding excessive school fees from parents.

Ruto said that the government issued a fees guideline for all schools and that school heads found charging high fees will be dealt with accordingly.

Speaking at Machakos Girls High School on Tuesday, Ruto said the government will not tolerate school heads that do not adhere to government directives and circulars.

He said the Ministry of Education will be conducting checks to establish whether the directive on school fees has been implemented.

The DP said the government is committed to making education accessible to Kenyans.

He said that the education ministry has been adequately funded in the 2015-2016 financial year that starts in July.

“We want to make education accessible and affordable to all Kenyan citizens,” he said.

Ruto said that the government has put in place mechanisms to nurture and develop talents among the youths especially those in schools.

He added that the government is keen to promote talents.

The DP stated that the government has channeled funds to schools and learning institutions to promote talent.

He said that there is talent among the youth which needs to be nurtured.

“The government has taken several steps towards encouraging and promoting talent in schools,” he said.

Ruto asked school administrators to work with the government and help promote talents through sports.

The deputy president noted that unemployment and other challenges facing the youths can be easily addressed through talent development.

At the same time, the deputy president asked secondary schools to invest more and allow innovation.

He said that students have great minds and can come up with innovative ideas to promote development.

He observed that some issues facing the country can be easily addressed through innovation.

The deputy president led Machakos Girls students, parents and stakeholders in celebrating 100 years since the school was established.
