Angry Sameta ward residents in Kisii County on Thursday improvised a foot bridge across River Mabera in a bid to avert more incidents of residents sliding and falling into the river due to the bad state of the previous bridge.
They asked the county government to set aside funds that could be used to improve foot bridges in the region besides asking area MCA Evans Siko to advocate for their plight.
According to them, the replaced foot bridge that connects Nyakoerema and Nyambune villages had led to injuries of more than seven residents since April this year.
“The foot bridge was in a very bad condition and we had to intervene to save more lives due to ongoing rains. About seven people have been critically injured while trying to cross over since April this year and that is why we are appealing to the county government through our MCA to act,” said Peter Nyanumba.
They accused Siko of failing to respond despite having knowledge on the matter for a long time and vowed to block his re-election if he failed to work with the county government to rectify the situation.
“We know our MCA can influence the county government to rectify all foot bridges in the area. If he fails to do that, them his re-election bid will be in jeopardy,” added Ben Nyaata.
Speaking on phone with Hivisasa.com, Siko said the project was on process since the county government had agreed to set aside funds for the function in 2015/16 budget.
“It is already in our budget and the matter will be solved soon. All we need is patience,” he said.
