Parents in Mavoko sub-county have been urged to provide their female children with sanitary pads.
The call was made on Friday by Rebecca Nzuki, the chairperson of Trust For Indigenous Culture and Health Non Governmental Organisation, Athi River branch.
"All parents from Mavoko sub-county should know that sanitary pads are not luxuries only meant for children from well off families, they should provide their own female children with the items," said Nzuki.
Nzuki who addressed the press at her offices in Athi River town on Friday said majority of the parents had ignored the important items to their children.
She said the most affected children were those from the slums where truancy and school drop outs among the girl child were high due to lack of sanitary pads and clean pants.
Nzuki disclosed that the organisation through its community health workers spread across the sub-county had found out that children fail to go to school due to embarrassment whenever they experience their menses but are unable to access sanitary pads.
She argued that all teenage girls have equal rights to the items in spite of their family backgrounds.
She said parents need to work hard to provide them with the necessities just the way they hustle to provide their households with food, shelter and other clothing items.
Nzuki said mothers should be at fore front in ensuring their female children are always provided with sanitary pads and pants as basic need and their constitutional rights.
