School heads in Kisii County have been urged to initiate programmes aimed at fighting drug abuse as it has become a common vice among school children.

The chairman of a community based organization, Youths against Drugs and Substance Abuse and HIV/AIDs (YADASAH) Mr Dan Ochanjo said the schools and even colleges heads must join the war against drugs abuse.

Speaking in Kisii town on Saturday during a drugs abuse sensitization programme, Ochanjo said foster parenthood programmes will help fight cases of drug abuse among other unacceptable behaviour exhibited by learners.

The Chairman said such programmes will enhance the relationship between learners and teachers so that learners can get a platform to share their problems.

“I strongly believe that working in isolation in the war against drugs abuse will not be as effective; that is why we want to bring school heads that interact with the learners every day,” Ochanjo said.

He said this move will provide a conducive environment in which learners undergoing serious psychological trauma due to drugs abuse share their experiences. He noted that there has been no platform for the youths share their experience as to why they opt for drugs and alcohol.
