Schools within Kisumu Central Business District(CBD) have petitioned the city manager over disturbance by hawkers.

The schools within the city such as Kisumu Boys, Kisumu Girls, Lake, Arya and M.M. Shah primary schools that have a population of nearly 7, 000 students, have persistently been complaining over the hawkers and noise that come from the traders.

Kisumu Girls High school for instance has filed a complaint to the city manager, Doris Ombara topping the list is the hawkers’ menace who they accuse of turning their fence to a toilet.

He said the grown up men urinate on the fence despite the presence of the school girls who are sometimes on their Physical education (PE) lessons.

“When our security guards try to apprehend those who are urinating on the fence, he is repulsed and sometimes beaten by hawkers,” said George Oyengo, the school’s Parents Teachers Association (PTA)Chair.

Oyengo also alleged that mechanics who have turned Railways Estate which borders the school, into a business premise claiming criminals who they assume to be hiding in the sheds, attempted twice to break into the school using the back gate.

The school also get noise disturbance from vehicles and traders, following its close proximity to the main bus park. “Thursdays and Fridays afternoons are often wasted in Kisumu Girls as we have mourners passing out on the adjacent road with a lot of noise that disrupts learning,” said Oyengo.
