Sponsors of schools in Itumbe Location, Sameta Sub-county have been urged to nominate qualified members to the schools' Boards of Managements (BOMs), to enhance quality service delivery and improve academic performance.
Itumbe Location Chief, Henry Mirera has said that the churches sponsoring various schools in his location should nominate members to their institutions based on the minimum academic qualifications as spelled out in the Basic Education Act, 2013.
Speaking to Hivisasa in his office today, Mirera commended the passing of the Basic Education Act,2013, saying it will weed out non-performing members who previously found their way to school boards through political manipulation and patronage.
Mirera decried past cases where members nominated to the boards led to poor performance in the schools they were serving due to lack of qualification and knowledge of their roles and responsibilities.
The administrator observed that, with the Act specifying the criteria and giving the cabinet secretary mandate to set the minimum qualifications for one to be nominated to sit in the school BoM, incompetent members sitting in school boards to draw allowances without service delivery will be removed.
"The government through the Ministry of Education has done a commendable job to put in place a law through an Act of Parliament to streamline the process of identifying and nominating members to sit in the BoM of schools. This should avert scenarios where anybody would be nominated to the board based on religious faith or political allegiance to the leadership of the day," said Mirera.
