Kiambu County farmers have been cautioned against over reliance on conventional fertilizers which have rendered soils acidic leading to poor yields.
James Mwaniki a Thika-based organic fertilizer expert posed the warning on Wednesday.
He said many farmers were reaping losses from farms because of constant use the fertilizers which have made soils lose their natural fertility.
Speaking to Hivisasa.com in Thika town, Mr Mwaniki advised farmers to use non acidifying fertilizers which are rich in nutrients.
"The fertilizer is incorporated with lime that stabilises the Potential Hydrogen of the soil to optimum levels of 5.5-6.5 that is favourable to plant life," he said.
He also advised the farmers to conduct soil testing to ascertain their acidity and fertility of their soils so that they are able to come up with superior fertilizers to remedy the situations and catapult farmers to attain high crop yields and boost soil fertility.
