Visual impairment in some cases has been declared avoidable, the World Health Organization has a goal to reduce such cases by 2020.
Maseno (A.C.K) Mission Hospital has a Sight care clinic to attend to people developing such complications for correctional services.
Mr Rono Robert, an optometrist at the facility says they offer eyesight check up, prescribes eye drop drugs and also advice on spectacle specifications for various eye patients.
Mr Rono has also advised anyone who has developed sight complications resulting from injuries, use of unprescribed eye drops, old age, consumption of illicit brews and victims of poor night vision to seek expert attention, or visit the facility monthly eye clinic.
The optometrist discouraged purchase of spectacles, eye drops or any drugs from clinics owned by 'quacks' and non licensed businessmen as this can worsen the situation or even lead to permanent visual impairment.
"There is a wide range of eye sight complications, just as we have different drugs and spectacles for correctional purposes as well as treatment. Therefore, I urge you to avoid sharing or using any type of eye drop or spectacle," Mr Rono said, while addressing patients who turned up for October's Sightcare Clinic on Monday at the Mission Hospital.
