Senate speaker Ekwe Ethuro has challenged Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to ensure good working relationships with their governors by not settling political scores through victimisation of the county bosses.
Speaking in Nakuru during the Nakuru County Assembly Strategic Plan launch over the weekend, Ethuro expressed concern that instead of engaging in meaningful debates, some assemblies were engaging in infighting, as was the case in the defunct local authorities.
He challenged the ward representatives to engage in mature debates that will see effective legislations put in place for the benefit of the electorate.
The speaker also assured of the senate’s commitment to see devolved governments work by ensuring that the counties' operations are free from corruption.
“Should any governor be summoned by the senate on corruption allegations, the senate will grill them in exercising the constitutional mandate bestowed upon them,” said Ethuro.
Ethuro praised devolution, saying it has had many achievements since inception one year ago. He added that institutions like the Constitution Implementation Commission (CIC) are there to provide solutions to the existing challenges.
Mandera senator Billow Kerrow, who doubles up as the chairman of the finance committee in the senate, said that there was need to allocate more resources to devolved government in order to realize the real dream of devolution.
He, however, called upon county assemblies to exercise their oversight role without fear or favour.
