Nominated senator Paul Njoroge has claimed that the donkey slaughterhouse that was set up in Naivasha was targeting wild animals roaming the area. Njoroge said that the slaughterhouse, which began operations early this month, did not have a steady supply of donkeys. The senator hit out at the owners, claiming that they did not explain well the source of the animals. He wants a government inspector to be placed at the slaughterhouse to identify all the animals being slaughtered. “We are afraid that their main target was the zebras in the area. We fear that they will be killed and yet this is an important part of our heritage,” he added. Njoroge called on the county government to be more careful with such investments saying that the slaughterhouse was not beneficial to the area. “We fear that they will also kill impalas and wildebeests. The butcher cannot satisfy the demand even with animals from areas like Marsabit and Turkana where they claim they will be sourcing the donkeys,” he added. He called on the government to stop with immediate effect the operations of the slaughterhouse. “We do not want the future generations to be affected by such investments. They have to leave our animals,” he added.
