A Nakuru based health social worker, Valentine Nyachae, has called for sensitisation and education of teenagers on sexuality to curb the spread of HIV/Aids and other sexually transmitted infections.

Speaking during an education forum at the Rift Valley Provincial Hospital in Nakuru on Tuesday, Nyachae said that sensitising teenagers on sexuality will reduce HIV/Aids spread by a big margin.

She observed that parents and guardians are afraid of educating their children about sexuality, a move she said has led to increased premature sex among teenagers.

“Parents should feel free and talk to their children on matters touching on their sexuality to avoid rising cases of premature sex that result to unwanted pregnancies and other issues,” she said.

The social health worker noted that most teenagers are getting and discovering information about sexuality from the internet.

She said that the internet has exposed teenagers to sensitive information which parents and guardians should have taught them earlier.

Nyachae called on the government to implement policies that will tackle HIV/Aids mostly among teenagers. She said the teenage group is at the most risk of contracting HIV/Aids and other infections.

Meanwhile, a section of parents at Bahati Ward in Nakuru have supported the Health and Reproduction Bill being crafted by nominated senator Judith Sijeny.

Pauline Wanjau, a parent, says that the Bill will help students get the required information on matters sexuality and reproduction.

She said that it will be important if students are enlightened on issues of reproduction and health which she said will empower them to make appropriate decisions in regard to sexuality and their health.
