Seven people have been confirmed dead while several others among them a driver are nursing injuries in Thika hospitals, after a late evening accident in Witeithie stage, Juja Sub-county on Saturday.

The accident involved a lorry that was transporting ballast from Ndarugo to Thika, which lost control and hit pedestrians standing on the roadside at the stage.

The residents of the area spent roughly an hour trying to recover the bodies of the deceased from the lorry, before the Kenya Red cross officials arrived and made work easier for them.

The police however took 30 minutes to arrive at the scene, which caused heavy traffic congestion on the Thika superhighway.

Area traffic police base commander Apelles Chacha, who arrived later when the injured had been taken to hospital urged drivers of such trucks and heavy commercial vehicles to be careful while driving on the superhighway, as they have been causing the majority of accidents recently.

He added that they will be conducting a thorough inspection on the vehicles come next week in partnership with National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), to ensure they track the un-roadworthy vehicles in a move to help reduce accidents.

The pedestrians have further been cautioned against standing aimlessly by the roadsides, bearing in mind that anything can happen.

The accidents come 24 hours after the Blue post accident which claimed four lives leaving scores nursing injuries.
