The Nakuru County government budget committee has set aside Sh45 million for the construction of the hawkers complex in Nakuru's Biashara ward.
Committee chairman Moses Ndung'u said the amount is aimed at encouraging investment and creating jobs in the county.
"In order to encourage investment, growth and expansion of economic and employment opportunities, the county has set aside the said amount for the construction of a hawkers’ complex,” said Ndung'u.
He added: “This comes at the right time as hawkers have no way to conduct their business. Their kiosks were demolished by Kinuthia Mbugua citing that there was need to clean the town."
Mary Atieno, a hawker, said the Sh45 million is not important to them now since it will take time before the complex is established.
"It is of no use to us as we are all aware of the delay and promises the county has given. We will just make do with what we can now hoping that this will benefit us in the future," said Atieno.
In the recent past, Nakuru town has been experiencing a tussle between the governor and the hawkers over the demolition of their kiosks.
Governor Mbugua said the demolitions will continue as he seeks to restore the town’s lost glory.
