The Nakuru County government has set aside Sh6 million to buy subsidised seeds and fertiliser for farmers during the 2014-2015 financial year, Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has said.

Mbugua said the seeds and fertilisers will be given to farmers from all the 11 constituencies in the county.

Speaking to reporters at the county offices, the governor said the county executive is aiming to reach more than 50,000 farmers.

Mbugua said the move aims at improving food security in the county and encouraging residents to embrace farming.

The governor said the five-year programme has been captured in the county’s strategic plan and will also see farmers trained on modern farming techniques.

Meanwhile, potato farmers from  Nakuru, Bomet and Nyandarua counties have signed an agreement to sell potatoes in 50 Kg bags.

Previously, the farmers have been packaging potatoes in 90kg bags, a situation that has often seen them exploited by middlemen.

Mbugua said the move will curb cases of exploitation, adding that the three counties have further agreed to enact uniform laws to regulate packaging and sale of the produce.
