Police from Kikuyu Police Station are holding six suspects in connection with embezzlement of Kikuyu Older Persons Cash Transfer Programme (OP-CT) funds.
Police said they have arrested a police officer, and other officers working in the OP-CT department in Kikuyu.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, Kiambu OCPD Mutune Maweo said they had launched investigations and the suspects will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
“We have launched investigations into the allegations and we will arraign the suspects in court once we are through with our investigations,” said Mutune.
Susan Njeri, a cash transfer officer based in Kikuyu Town, said she noticed irregularities in the system and informed police who acted quickly and arrested the suspects.
“There has been false information in the system regarding those receiving cash from the programme which forced me to notify the police. There is need for the system to be harmonised to weed out ghost beneficiaries,” said Njeri.
Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwa condemned the vice and called for tough action against those implicated in the syndicate.
“Cash transfer programmes are meant to help elderly and those abusing the fund should be taken to court to be a warning to others,” said Kimani.
