Motorists using the Nairobi-Nakuru highway have urged the government to expand the road especially at the Gilgil Weigh Bridge station to ease movement of vehicles.

The motorists complained that they spend a lot of time at the bridge since they have to adapt to the slow pace of moving trucks that have to be checked and inspected.

Musa Kuria, a matatu conductor, said that expanding the road by creating a special carriage-way for trucks will help.

“The government should expand the stretch along Naivasha-Gilgil especially at the weighing bridge. The time wasted on that stretch is too much and it is just the trucks being weighed,” he said.

And as that issues was raised, hundreds of motorists spent close to six hours in traffic along the Naivasha-Gilgil road Thursday morning after two loaded trucks developed mechanical problems and blocked the road.

The trucks that were heading to Eldoret broke down near the Gilgil weigh bridge, inconveniencing hundreds of motorists.

It took hours for the traffic police to clear the road and direct traffic that stretched for kilometres. The traffic was made worse by the arrest of some motorists who were caught overlapping to avoid the jam.

Area traffic commandant Charlton Muriithi said the trucks broke down on Wednesday night but the traffic started building up Thursday morning.
