Over 5,000 internally displaced persons and forest evictees will receive over Sh1 billion as the State moves to resettle them.

With this money, the IDPs are expected to start a new life and engage in activities that will improve their quality of lives.

This has been made possible after the Deputy President William Ruto together with Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua presented a cheque of over Sh114 million to six IDP camps in Gilgil, Nakuru County on Saturday meant to resettle the people who were displaced by 2007 post-election violence.

While handing over the cheque in Gilgil, Ruto said it is the right of every Kenyan to have a dignified livelihood.

On the other hand, Governor Mbugua who was in the company of five MCAs from Gilgil Sub-County hailed the national government efforts saying the initiative will go a long way in alleviating pain among the affected families.

The DP was accompanied by Devolution Cabinet Secretary Ann Waiguru and the National Consultative Coordination Committee members, MPs Samuel Ndiritu (Gilgil) and Ferdinand Waititu (Kabete).

From Gilgil, the Deputy President, and the Governor and his deputy Joseph Ruto, Njoro MP Joseph Kiuna among other leaders later went to Teret Centre in Mauche Ward, Njoro Sub-County where they handed over resettlement payments worth over Sh215 million to IDPs in the area.

Through his Facebook page, the Deputy President thanked all the people concerned for being patient while the government looked into the IDP issue.

"We thank wanainchi for being patient with the Government while we sorted out the issue of IDPs. The money disbursed should be put to good use and enable the families start a new life. Humbled to present resettlement funds to internally displaced persons at Teret Centre, Nakuru County," read the status on the DP's Facebook page.
