Learning was paralysed for the better part of Wednesday morning following a strike in both Nsicha primary and the newly established Nsicha Secondary school in Borabu constituency of Nyamira County over a classroom.
According to the primary school deputy head teacher Simwamu Alex, they had lent the two classrooms block to the new secondary school which was built by the area constituency development fund (C.D.F) kitty to accommodate the students until they built their own. The block was designed for the standard one pupils’ laptop project.
Chaos erupted when the pupils resumed from midterm recess only to find what they had been using as their classrooms for sometimes locked with an additional padlock on top of the one they had used.
This angered the student and started rioting in the school compound that saw destruction of many properties.
They broke the block’s windows doors, burnt primary school’s desks and later locked offices for the better part of the day.
Speaking at the school, a form two student who sought anonymity claimed that they were not informed of the action of being relocated and there was no communication from either side.
The school lacks classrooms and this could translate to the students prolonging their midterm break.
“You know if we were given a notice on time, the situation could have not been this ugly, we see this as a plot to kill this young school which is yet to stand on its own,” said the form two boy.
However the management of the primary school defended their move and that they had informed the leadership of the sister secondary school of the intended relocation.
They said that they were renovating the block for use as a strong room for the Primary schools’ Laptop project which is likely to commence next year.
Our efforts to reach the secondary school principal Samuel Nyagacho bore no fruits as he was not in office during our visit and several phone calls went unanswered.
Nsicha secondary school is three years old and its highest class is form three.
