Egerton University, Nakuru Town campus students have welcomed a move by the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko to recommend charges against a police officer who allegedly shot and killed two students from the university in November 7, 2014.
Led by their chairperson Boniface Kavini, the students lauded the DPP for finally giving the nod to have constable Patrick Thuranira face charges of killing Dennis Magomere and Felix Nyangena at the Globe Cinema roundabout in Nairobi for allegedly being involved in mugging activities.
Kavini termed the move long overdue, saying that the slain students and their families have been crying for justice.
"The DPP has done a great job by finding the said officer answerable despite it coming a bit late. However, we all believe that justice will prevail and the two students will finally be vindicated wherever they are," he said.
Thuranira who is attached to the anti-mugging unit in Nairobi's Central Police Station was accused by the Independent Policing Oversite Authority (Ipoa) of among others, labeling the students' bodies as unidentified at the City Mortuary yet they had both their college and National Identity cards, as well as failing to disclose the identities of the said two to their family members.
The Authority said that investigations revealed that the slain students had travelled from Egerton University, Njoro Campus on that fateful day.
