More than 500 farmers in Subukia constituency will soon benefit from an irrigation project after the Nakuru county government released Sh3.5 million to oversee the completion of Kabazi-Rugongo project.
The project chairman, Philip Muraya, told journalists on Tuesday that they have received the money from the county government and other development partners which will be used to complete the Sh23 million irrigation project.
He said that they expect more funds from the national government in order to complete the initiative by July this year.
"We have received funds from the county government and expecting more from development partners in order to complete the project by July this year," he said.
Mr Muraya noted that food production will increase once farmers start harnessing water from the irrigation project.
He added that farmers in the area largely depend on rainfall for their farming which sometimes take long to come, hence low food production.
The chairman said that the project intends to cover over 1,000 acres of land, where various crops will be planted.
Mr Muraya observed that through irrigation projects, the county will have adequate food production which will in turn fight poverty and promote economic development.
