Thika sub-county residents have been called upon to work hand in hand with the county government security personnel to eradicate drug abuse menace that is on the high rise in the area.

Kiambu TNA coordinator Gladys Chania said drug abuse is a serious threat to life and development and called for concerted efforts from all the stakeholders to ensure the fight is won.

“This loss of life is something that could have been prevented if sensitisation on the perils of illicit brew consumption had been executed and proper guidelines formulated,” she said.

She commended the efforts by the MPs, commissioners and administrators over the intensified fight against illicit brews but added that other drugs should also be fought intensively as the youths are indulging into other drugs after abandoning alcoholism.

Speaking in Thika on Monday, Chania noted that she is concerned with the increases of drug abuse by youths who are presently being considered future leaders.

She said the government should move to ensure all the bars and pubs near learning institutions are not licensed, adding that such facilities in the estates were a big lure to the youths and were exposing them to alcoholic products.

He advised that Nacada officials should regularly visit the joints being licensed to ensure that they are situated in the right environment.

Chania said she will not relent in the fight against drug and substance abuse especially to the youths and said chiefs and their assistants should ensure bar operators in the locality stick to the set time of operation.
