Teachers strike has been the talk of town for quite so long now, with salaries being the major point of concern amongst our tutors.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut), has really focused on the wellbeing of its members even to the extent of forgetting the welfare of the children whom without them teachers could have no significance.

Yes, of course, teachers should and must be paid for they sacrifice a lot to turn ignorant beings into clever, wiser and knowledgeable professionals.

One thing though, that the government is not emphasising on is the social integration and cohesion in the education sector.

It is sad that 52 years down the line, since Kenya gained its independence, teachers are forced to teach in their own home county until 5 years are over so that they can seek transfers to another counties; something that is mind boggling as one is supposed to follow bureaucratic procedures to eventually get what they want.

Teaching being a noble profession should give room to teachers to freely and comfortably serve their nation so as to avoid pitiful cases where certain counties are understaffed compared to the number of teachers who graduate from teachers training colleges and universities annually.

According to the report provided by the Truth Justice and Reconciliation Commission on proposed ways of fighting tribalism and enhancing national cohesion is deploying teachers to counties all over the country.

Government together with education stakeholders should come together and think of how to not only solve teachers’ crisis but also use teachers as a tool to national unity and patriotism.
