Teachers in Limuru sub-county have been advised to take up special education courses to encourage school administrators to enrol children with special needs in their classes.
Speaking from his office on Friday, Special needs education officer in charge of Limuru sub-county, James Mwaura, said the number of children with special need was going up and it was important for the institutions of learning to prepare to integrate them in the schools within their neighbourhoods.
"In order to achieve an inclusive education system, it is important for the teachers to have knowledge and skills in special education courses offered at the Kenya Institute of Special Education(KISE)," said Mwaura.
Mwaura said the move is critical as it will ensure learners with special needs feel accepted contrary to the current scenario where they appear neglected or left out.
He said although the inclusive education system was facing some challenges, it was necessary to help those in need of special needs grow academically and cope with other members of the society at a tender age.
Jane Njeri, who is a local teacher at Kamandora primary school, said inclusion of such learners in a classroom might prove challenging as the teachers will have to pay more attention to the students.
She however added that learning together will help the children relate to each other and encourage normal learners to respect those living with challenges and embrace them as their brothers and sisters.
