A Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) official has advised teachers to shun illicit brews and instead be role models in society.
Knut Wareng Branch executive secretary John Boor said on Wednesday that it is sad to hear teachers dying due to consumption of illegal and cheap brews and yet they are supposed to be role models in society.
He said such teachers risk stern action, since it is against their work ethics.
“Teachers are deemed as role models for society to envy them. Who will the society trust in offering advice and yet the ones who are supposed to offer such advice are a bad example?” he asked.
The second generation liquor has claimed two teachers, while another is undergoing treatment in hospital after allegedly consuming illicit brew.
He blamed the Uasin Gishu County government for laxity in dealing with those involved in the sale and distribution of illegal liquor and yet it is claiming many lives in the region.
“The police, chiefs and county askaris are corrupt in exchange of a few coins. Dealers of illicit brews are left to continue with their businesses without putting in mind the dangers that will arise,” said Boor in his office.
