A 19 year old man was on Thursday charged before a Kisumu court with vandalising a barbed wire fence.

Sammy Otieno denied before chief magistrate Esther Maina that he vandalised the fence belonging to Gerishom Ocholla a resident of Nyamasaria in Kisumu. According to the prosecution the offence was committed on the September 27 this year.

The court heard that Otieno has been removing the barbed wire from the posts around the compound of Ocholla on a number of occasions. The accused is said to have vandalized barbed wire that covers three kilometres.

Otieno was nabbed after Ocholla laid a trap for him. He was caught red handed by the complainant on the fateful night. Although Otieno managed to escape, the matter was reported to the Nyamasaria police who immediately launched a man hunt.

He was arrested on August 30 while trying to sell the stolen barbed wires to scrap metal dealers.

The arrest came after the police were tipped on Otieno's whereabouts.

Otieno told the court that he thought the property was abandoned.

He was released on cash bail of sh5, 000 pending the hearing on the 14th of January.
