Residents of Nyamarambe in South Mugirango constituency on Wednesday threatened to engage regional police in running battles if the officers failed to solve the mystery behind the death of a boda boda operator.
Businesses in the Southern Kisii region came to a standstill, as angry residents backed by boda boda operators demanded that police answered questions regarding escalating insecurity in the region.
According to them, Mr. Douglas Aungo was tricked by anonymous people before he was killed and his body subsequently dumped by the road side.
“This is really bad that police are just relaxing and condoning the gang that is mercilessly killing our people. The government must solve the insecurity in this region because Aungo is the third person we will bury in less than three months,” said Mr. Nyambane Omboto.
They urged the government to take action against police officers from Nyamarambe police post for allegedly failing to act whenever they report people suspected to be giving residents sleepless nights.
“The Interior Ministry should act of these officers who are basically sleeping on their job. They never carry out patrols besides failing to arrest suspects that we have positively identified,” added Hannington Obare.
However, Sgt. Mwangi Kamau defended officers from accusations and pointed at boda boda operators of failing to cooperate with the administration in a bid to combat insecurity.
“Police officers are doing their job. The problem is that motorbike operators are aware of the network that is oppressing residents but they have failed to give us details that could lead to apprehension of perpetrators.
