Thika Sub-County on Tueday marked the day of the African child in an event graced by the Thika sub-county children’s’ officer Rebecca Kariuki and the area district officer Clare Akinyi.
The childrens’ officer has in the event faulted both governments for missing the events and meetings convened by her office. She said that children in the sub-county are in great need of help which should not only be done by NGOs as it at the moment.
She accused Kiambu County government of absconding its duties of protecting the children rights and privileges. She said that most of the sub-county children are victims of child labour and are being introduced to immorality and other evils.
Kariuki noted that the increased number of street children in Thika Town can be tamed if there is partnership between the two governments. She called on the area Deputy County Commissioner Jeremiah Gicheru to lead the county government by example.
“These children are increasing day by day. We are trying our best to maintain a zero rate of children on the streets. We cannot achieve this if leaders are missing our meetings and other important events,” Kariuki said.
Akinyi said there is need to enhance goodwill in addressing issues touching on street children. She called on the government to construct rehabilitation centres or facilitate current children’s homes which are failing due to lack of funds.
She assured the children rights watch team that she will support them seek facilitation from the national government.
Governor William Kabogo and Gicheru, who were the chief guests, did not attend the event.
