Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a has asked governor William Kabogo to declare illicit brewing a serious social problem and a threat to development and also seek help from the national government on how to tame it.

Speaking on Thursday at the Thika Level Five Hospital when she visited survivors of the Kiandutu slum illegal brew that killed seven people, the MP said that the issue of illegal drinks and brews has gotten out hand.

She said that the efforts to fight illegal drinks and brew has not bore fruits in the sub-county and continues to cause problems.

“I urge governor William Kabogo to declare illicit brew and illegal alcohol a threat to Kiambu,” she said.

The legislator said that despite the initiatives put in place to discourage brewing most people are still making and consuming brews.

She said that the development of Kiambu County will be at threat if illicit brews are not eliminated.

The MP asked government agencies including the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse (Nacada) and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to help curb supply of illegal drinks.

She also appealed to the police to crackdown on dens and bars selling illegal alcohol.

County Commissioner Esther Maina on Thursday ordered the arrest of distributors of the illegal drinks that killed seven people and left others hospitalised in Kiandutu slums.

Maina said that a team has been established to deal with illicit brews and illegal alcohol.

The commissioner warned pubs and bars against selling fake drinks saying that they will be arrested and charged in court.
