Thika West Sub-County residents have been urged not to discriminate people living with disabilities and instead treat them as able-bodied members of the society.
Speaking at an official government departments meeting at Thika probations hall on Wednesday, James Wainaina, a doctor at Thika level Five Hospital, noted that some parents in the area hide children living with disabilities for the fear that they could be treated as cursed members of the society.
Dr Wainaina asked the Kiambu County government to create equal opportunities of employment for those living with disabilities.
“Training opportunities should be equally shared in both the formal and informal sectors so that the physically challenged are able to feel as equal members of the society,” said Dr Wainaina.
“We should not look down upon this talented but physically challenged individuals who have the capabilities of transforming Kiambu County.”
The doctor urged parents who have children with physical impairment to take advantage of the Disabled Fund programme to enable their children to access education and later use the government provided funds to benefit themselves.
