Thika Town Ward MCA Kennedy Mwangi has appealed to the county government to stop harassment of hawkers and other traders in the name of enforcing county government by-laws.
Speaking in Thika town on Wednesday where the Thika MCAs met with ward and sub-county administrators, Mwangi said that it was wrong for the county government to use alleged NYS interns to militarily handle the issue of law breaking.
"How can you justify these NYS attacking the hawkers and motorists with rungus as they bundle them into county vans like baggage? We are not opposed to you doing your work, but we are only calling for a human face into the whole exercise,” he said.
“Please, let us be a bit humane when arresting these people," he requested Rose Sakwa, the Thika Sub-County Administrator, who was presiding over the meeting.
It is alleged that the county government of Kiambu hired the NYS youths as their askaris after the injuring of the former askaris by the prison warders earlier due to a land tussle.
The administrator, Sakwa, admitted that the NYS were harassing the hawkers, bodaboda operator as well as tuktuk drivers as during the meeting at the Thika Stadium, the askaris were spotted harassing a tuk tuk driver and thus raising concerns over the issue.
She assured the MCA that she will act on the issue immediately.
