Nyaribari Chache Member of Parliament Richard Tong’i is yet to decide on whether or not to support the push of election date from August to December 2017.
Addressing the press at Keumbu on Saturday, Tong’i said he will depend on the experts before making his independent decision on the proposed changes on the election date by a section of MPs.
“All stakeholders will be involved before discussing the election date amendment bill. We will listen from experts before we move with the motion,” said Tong’i.
The adamancy of the legislator on the push of election date can be viewed as a go slow, since the bill is a proponent of MPs allied to the government, in which he is a ‘kitchen member’.
Ford People, which gave him the ticket to Nyaribari Chache helm, is also a partner party in the Jubilee coalition.
Nyaribari Chache parliamentary aspirant Rachael Otundo has also voiced her opinion, challenging the MPs to involve all stakeholders in any amendment done to the constitution.
She is however opposed to the said amendments to the election date, accusing legislators of egocentricity.
“They want to stay in power forever which cannot be. The constitution must be respected and the MPs cannot wake up and think they can make amendments as they wish. All stakeholders must be involved in any changes or amendments to be done in the constitution before taking motion for discussion,” the constitutional expert ventilated.
Other MPs from Gusii region who have given a wide-berth to the move are Dr James Gesami from West Mugirango and Kitutu Masaba representative Timothy Bosire, who both hail from Nyamira County.
The bill has since been fervently opposed by the opposition, who have vowed to shoot it down when it comes up for debate in the National Assembly.
The bill, which is sponsored by Ugenya MP David Ochieng’ has seen a back up of Fourteen MPs from the Jubilee coalition, and got blessings from the committee for Justice and Legal Affairs.
