Traders in Kikuyu Sub-County have appealed to the government to help them fight counterfeit goods saying they were affecting their businesses.
According to the Traders Association chairman Richard Ndungu , traders were incurring great losses due to the influx of fake products in the market.
He said traders who have been affected the most were those selling mobile phones and medicines.
He said unsuspecting customers buy the goods because they are cheap, but were unaware of the consequences of counterfeits.
Speaking on Monday in Kikuyu town, Ndungu revealed that traders selling genuine products were making big losses due to the stereotyping of certain products as being fake.
The chairman advised the public to be careful when doing their shopping to avoid falling prey to unscrupulous traders.
He appealed to the government to be tough on its war on counterfeits, saying they were robbing the country of billons of shillings.
A mobile phone dealer from the area, Kevin Kibera said he had lost many clients who had shunned his shop due to the stereotyping that traders in his category deal in fake goods.
He now plans to venture into another business because he does not enjoy any profit from selling mobile phones.
