Kiambu County Water and Environment CeC Esther Njuguna has said that a program to plant trees in schools and residential areas throughout the county is under way.

Addressing Murera residents in Ruiru on Thursday, Njuguna said the county government will provide seedlings to schools and households in order to increase the tree cover in the county.

"Our county is facing a great danger of desertification due to cutting down of trees by people in order to put up apartments and commercial houses. This is why we have found it wise to start this campaign to counter the effects of this mass cut down of trees," said Njuguna.

The CeC also urged residents to embrace the 'cut one plant two' slogan in order to maintain the county's tree cover.

Njuguna also revealed that the county government is intending to supply Kiambu residents with clean drinking water by up to 65 per cent by 2018.

"We have already entered into a memorandum with Visionary Empowerment Programme where we have started to give out water tanks to households in order to conserve water," said Njuguna.
