Parents from Mavoko have called on the Teachers Service Commission to pay teachers their salary increments so as to end the stalemate.

Addressing journalists in Athi River Town on Monday, the parents through their representative, Nancy Mukwana, said the teachers deserve the increments.

"The Teachers Service Commission should respect the courts and pay teachers the proposed 50-60 per cent salary increment as ordered by the courts," said Mukwana.

Mukwana said reasons given by the teachers' representative unions, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education (KUPPET) were valid arguing teachers in public schools across the country struggle with children to mold them from 'nobody' to 'somebody' under pathetic conditions and poor pay.

"Teachers deserve more money than any other civil servants. It is disturbing though because it is the most ignored profession by the government," said Mukwana.

According to Mukwana, the government has the ability to pay the teachers the salary increments which they are demanding for.

Mukwana said that the state only needed the will to do so arguing that Kenya Revenue Authority collects adequate taxes from members of the public that if well utilised, can be of assistance towards this course.

She cautioned the commission against politicising the increment issue and urged the government to speedily execute the payments adding that teachers too needed to enjoy their constitutional rights just like the children they teach.
