Nakuru County health officials are on high alert after new cases of cholera were reported in Mogotio area.

Twenty cholera patients from Mogotio, which lies at the border of Baringo and Nakuru counties have been hospitalised in the last one week.

Nakuru County public health officer Samuel King'ori says that the situation is under control while confirming that no one has died from the disease.

“We are already carrying out the cholera awareness campaigns in schools in bid to control the disease,” he added in an interview on Thursday at his office.

King'ori called out on the residents to practice basic hygiene, saying that proper hand washing prevents more than 15,000 deaths in a year.

“We intend to carry out the Global Hand Washing Day celebrations in Bondeni Primary School to encourage more pupils to exercise proper hygiene practices,” he added.

King'ori pointed out that the county would also engage in a door to door anti-cholera campaigns.

“We are working with both the Nakuru and Baringo county government to mobilise resources for the campaign so that we can prevent the disease from spreading,” he added

He also reiterated the county's preparedness to address any disease outbreaks during the anticipated El Nino rains.

“We have already set out proper measures to ensure that the rains do not lead to an outbreak of water-borne diseases,” he added.
