Police from Matutu in Borabu constituency on Monday apprehended two people suspected to have vandalized Kenya Power and Lighting Company transformers in the region.
According to eye witnesses, the two; identified as Moffat Nyarangi and Pius Oganda were cornered at dawn executing the crime by a group of residents who were travelling to a nearby market in Nyansiongo.
“I heard an argument outside at 5 am and decided to check on it only to see people standing near the transformer. It was actually Good Samaritans who had cornered people who were vandalizing the transformer that serves over 100 people in this region,” said Tabitha Okemwa.
Okemwa further added that the two suspects tried to escape but they were overpowered by concerned residents who had woken up as a result of the commotion.
“They were very powerful and even overpowered the first batch of people who had cornered them. However, some residents who had woken up gave a reinforcement and eventually the two were overpowered,” she added.
Sgt. James Mwangi of Matutu Police station confirmed the incident and said the two would be held for a day to face interrogation before being taken to court to answer vandalism charges.
“They are in our custody and we have started interrogating them. We want to establish some issues with regard to vandalism and hopefully tomorrow they will be taken to Keroka Law courts,” he said.
