Two children aged 10 and one-year-old have been admitted at the Naivasha Sub-County Hospital suffering from cholera.

Sub-county Medical Officer of Health (MOH) Dr Oren Ombiro said the two, who were admitted over the weekend, hailed from Kihoto slum and Council Estate, respectively, but they are in stable condition.

According to Dr Ombiro, the 10-year-old victim hails from Kihoto where most of the cholera cases in the sub-county were reported. She had allegedly visited an aunt at Council estate and infected the niece.

Addressing the press in his office, Dr Ombiro said the infected niece who also suffered severe malnutrition, was in shock when she arrived at the hospital and that she would remain hospitalised until after she is treated for all the ailments.

“We managed to rehydrate the severely malnourished one-year-old who was vomiting and experienced diarrhoea. She is stable. The other child is also stable but can’t be discharged to go to school until she is free from the disease,” Dr Ombiro said.

He said immediately the pupil was confirmed to have cholera, medical personnel visited her school and disinfected it to avoid further contamination.

At the same time, the MOH said medical personnel were on high alert to deal with any emerging cases. He asked that that anybody suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting should seek treatment immediately.

To-date, cholera 16 cases have been reported in the sub-county since its outbreak over a month ago.

12 cases have been confirmed.
