Two passengers died on Tuesday after a matatu they were travelling in lost control and rolled over in Thika.

Thika Traffic Base Commander Mr Allele Sasha said the accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when the vehicle veered off the road and landed in a ditch.

“The driver of the Nissan matatu was unable to control the vehicle prompting it to veer off the road and landed in a ditch,” he said. “One passenger died on the spot while the other one succumbed upon arriving at Thika Level 5 Hospital.”

He said the driver and the tout were among those who sustained injures and were taken to Thika level 5 Hospital for treatment.

Speaking at the scene of the accident, Sasha cautioned drivers to be very careful on the roads.

“Drivers should be careful when on roads to minimise accidents,” said Sasha.

He also warned drivers who have been flouting traffic rules that stern action will be taken against them.

“The traffic department will be on the lookout for those flouting traffic rules and tough action will be taken against them,” said Sasha.

The bodies of the deceased passengers were taken to Thika Level -5 Hospital Mortuary while the wreckage was towed to Thika Police Station.
