More than 17 people in Gachororo slums of Juja Sub-County were forced to seek for accommodation from neighbours last night after their houses caught fire and burned to ashes.

The 2 houses are said to have caught fire at around 2pm when one of the men inside lit a cigar and left it on a window causing it to burn some papers; the fire then spread to rest of the houses.

The residents of the area struggled to put out the fire but were unable because the iron sheets caught fire very quickly.

Few things were saved from the fire by the residents among them 2 children who were asleep; one of them was seriously injured while the other one recovered from inhaling smoke later.

Area MP Francis Munyua arrived at the scene and donated Kshs. 10, 000 to each of the families to ensure that they had enough to seek refuge before they were supported to build other houses. He also cautioned the residents against carelessness while dealing with fire citing that their houses are prone to fire.

Munyua faulted the county government of Kiambu for failing to set aside at least a fire Sub-Station that would come in handy during such occurrences.

It is alleged that the fire brigade were called after the residents noticed the fire but that they never turned up.
