Police have arrested two suspects believed to be members of the 40 Brothers gang which has been terrorising Kisumu residents.

The suspects were arrested on Thursday by APs Quick Response Team commander superintendent Karanja Muiruri.

The police also recovered an AK47 riffle during the raid at Kasawino, Nyamasaria area along the Kisumu-Nairobi road.

They were escorted under tight security to Kisumu Central Police Station for further investigation.

The gang believed to be operating from a base in Nyamasaria has been terrorising residents of Manyatta, Nyalenda, Mamboleo and Car wash.

Assistant Inspector General of Police Joseph Keitany said the suspects were arrested following a tip off by members of the public.

Keitany said one of the suspects believed to be a hardcore criminal was successfully identified by victims of his criminal acts.

He said the other suspects were also identified as police intensified the crackdown on the gang members.

“It is encouraging that the public identified the suspects and we are still on with our operations to make sure Kisumu is secured from criminal activities,” Keitany said.

The arrest follows the residents’ demand for quick action from the national and county governments to boost security in town.

Seven other suspected members of the gang were arrested last month following intensive operation by QRT officers.

Sub-County Commissioner Ole Tutui on September 23 said the suspects were arrested during a police swoop.

Residents and business operators commended the QRT for arresting the suspects. Kisumu City Residence Voice Association Chairman Audi Ogada urged police to work closely with locals to curb insecurity.
