Uasin Gishu has been cited among counties with the highest cases of Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) in North Rift region.
According to a report by Rural Women Peace Link Group, Uasin Gishu tops with highest reported cases of SGBV.
Speaking to reporters at Eldoret Town on Thursday, the lobby's director Fred Yego said that the statistics are alarming.
The official revealed that over 200 SGBV cases have been reported in Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Trans-Nzoia counties respectively in the past one year.
Yego said that cases that are not reported could be much more.
“We are alarmed by the high GBV cases within Nandi, Uasin Gishu and Tran-Nzoia,” said Yego.
He said that sexual violence and defilement are among the top acts perpetrated against women and girls.
Yego cited wife battering and child labour as other forms of violence rife in the three counties.
The lobby director blamed lenient laws which he said allow the perpetrators of the crimes to walk free.
He called for the review of SGBV laws to ensure justice for survivors.
“Stakeholders should quickly review the laws o SGBV so that criminals can go to jail a survivor’s get justice,” he said.
The lobby director also urged victims of SGBV to report the cases to enable the police to act.
