Uasin Gishu nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA) Ms Rehema Korir has sponsored a motion asking the county government to address the issue of growing number of street children in Eldoret.
While moving the motion, the MCA pointed out that the number of street children has in the recent days been on increase. This, she said, could adversely affect the economy as well as pose a security threat in the county.
The motion seeks to have the children removed from the streets and further rehabilitated.
“These street children have trooped back to the streets causing both insecurity and other social problems. The county government should take some of these orphaned children to rescue centres and take back those who had run away from home to their families,” said Rehema.
She urged the county administration to find a long lasting solution to the menace of street children and put the matter to rest.
Peer pressure, lack of food in some homes and the society’s culture of giving hand-outs, she noted, have in the past been identified as the leading factors contributing to the upsurge of street children in Eldoret town.
