Farmers in Uasin Gishu have been urged to plant bamboo trees, since they are faster in growth, protect the environment and water catchment areas.
Speaking on Thursday in his office in Eldoret, the Chairman of Forest society of Kenya Uasin Gishu branch Solomon MIbei said that they are sensitizing the public on the importance of bamboo, its value to farmers and offer them seedlings to plant.
“In the North Rift, we have 400,000 bamboo seedling in our nursery and in conjunction with NEMA, we are poised to plant over 1 million bamboo seedlings in the region,” he said.
He further urged farmers to try this new plant since it has more benefits; both financial and for home use compared to any other crop that has ever been grown.
“In this rainy season you should at least plant one tree to conserve the environment and if you cut one tree, plant two,” he added.
He urged the county government to sponsor them in their course of making Kenya a tree nation through moral and financial support.
He reiterated that they have embarked on a programme meant to senstise primary school children on the importance of planting trees, impacting them with knowledge to avoid negative thinking on tree planting.
