Farmers in Uasin Gishu County will be trained on the modern irrigation technologies so that they are able to produce high yields both for local and export markets.
Speaking in his office on Friday CEC for Agriculture Mr Cyril Cheruiyot said that the National Irrigation Board has commenced irrigation projects in soy location, Eldoret West Sub County to irrigate 15,000 acres. The project will draw water from Ziwa Dam in Uasin Gishu County.
"The main objective of this project is to enhance food security, to produce high value crops and to encourage farmers to make good use the dry seasons of December, January and February to plant so as to generate income for the farmers and also create employment," he said.
He added that the Uasin Gishu County government is working closely with the National Irrigation Board and other stakeholders so that they are involved in the project as much as possible.
The main aim of the project, he said, is to generate income for farmers that will help them improve their livelihoods.
