Uasin Gishu County is adequately prepared to deal with any negative effects that might be caused by the expected El Nino rains, governemnt officials have said.

It is anticipated that roads could suffer the most in case there is a continuous downpour. For this reason, the CeC in charge of Roads, Transport and Infrastructure Mr Gideon Birir and his counterpart in Environment, Energy, Water & Natural Resource Ms Mary Njogu launched a drainage upgrading program at Racecourse Ward.

Birir assured the residents of Uasin Gishu County that his department will open up all the drainages in Eldoret town and all the roads in other parts of the county.

He further affirmed that the county government is ready to mitigate the effects that might be caused by the above normal rains. Ms Njogu said that her department will ensure that garbage collection within Eldoret town will be enhanced so that water borne diseases does not become a problem during this rainy season.

She, however, cautioned the members of public against throwing garbage to the drainage systems since it will beat the logic of unblocking them.

Also present was the Executive member for Public Service Management Ms Margret Chepkwony, the area MCA Mr Amos Kiptoo and other government officials.

Ms Chepkwony who was representing the Health department assured Uasin Gishu residents that there are enough medicines and medical staff at the county’s health facilities to deal with all manner of diseases.

Area MCA Hon Amos Kiptoo further said he has a comprehensive plan to ensure that security lights are installed along the road from the Airport to the CBD. The governor was talking today at town hall.
