Uasin Gishu County Women leaders have established an initiative that seeks to mentor and promote girl-child education in the region.
Speaking in Eldoret on Tuesday after meeting women leaders from Uasin Gishu County, county women representative Eusilah Ngeny said that the mentorship programme will involve all girls from the region, because most of them lack role models whom they can look up to.
“This mentorship programme is an attempt by those of us who escaped FGM, early pregnancies and marriages to redraw our strategy in empowering the girl child,” she said.
She added they will be reaching out to girls in schools to share their experiences, challenges and successes all geared towards instilling hope and confidence in them.
“I believe mentors can guide, encourage and open doors for girls and young women to be fully equipped for the world of opportunities we want them to believe in themselves,” added Ngeny.
The programme will be a relief to many young girls in the area, who have been faced with different cultural adversities like FGM and early marriages.
